news, press, references | 15. April 2008 Security for slide bearings. A field report.
Imagine you are in charge of security and access control in an industrial plant and need to select the best technology for your company. What do you value? Innovative products? Tailored solutions? First-class references? One-to-one advisory services? For Thomas Böck, the engineer in charge of security at Miba all these concerns were equally important. EVVA was the company which could best fulfil such strict requirements.
Vehicles without slide bearing technology would be unimaginable today. No car, train or ship would be able to run without slide bearings. One of the major manufacturers of these components is Miba in Austria. This industrial concern is the world market and technology leader for medium-speed diesel motors.
Decades of experience, constant development work and, last but not least, highly qualified employees are the reasons behind Miba's reputation for excellence. These are characteristics which are also an overriding priority for its in-house security system.
Fulfilling all industry requirements.
In Miba's main facility in Laakirchen in Upper Austria over 700 workers are employed to produce complex slide bearings for machines and engines. Many people move about the plant on a daily basis, a situation which requires an access control system to strictly regulate who has access to certain places at certain times. The security concept must also to be able to withstand tough conditions in an industrial operation and offer a long life cycle.
Complex solutions and optimum safe long-term investment are thus imperative. EVVA products are the answer to such a demand: "EVVA products were already in use at our plant and we were extremely satisfied with them," states Thomas Böck, the engineer responsible for security and the environment at Miba in Laakirchen. "We now wanted to extend our security system and use electronic access control with work time logging in addition to existing mechanical cylinders. With their leading edge experience, EVVA managed to win us over once again with their innovative solutions and very professional, one-to-one advisory services despite competition from rivals.“
Protection against dirt
Miba's main facility is one of the largest production plants in the group and consists of 20 buildings. A total of about 500 doors are fitted with EVVA mechanical 3KS cylinders (3-curve system). 3KS is a very secure system - it is practically impossible to copy keys - and is also highly resistant to wear. The spring-free design and the sturdy nickel silver materials guarantee effective resistance and a long service life. It is thus ideal for use in industrial plants where they work with machines, oil and raw materials. A further great advantage for Miba is that the 3KS modular design enables cylinder lengths to be easily adjusted to individual door thicknesses on site. This saves on both time and money. The system is quickly fitted and accurately adjusted by our EVVA partner.
Access control and work time logging in a single system
For many companies, combining mechanical and electronic security technology is ideal for business management reasons. This is also the case for Miba. Mechanics provide a secure basic system. The electronic SALTO system with its contactless Legic technology comes into use for special doors such as those in the main entrance, the data processing centre and other sensitive areas. This widely-used locking system, popular throughout the world, not only provides effective access control, but also integrates work time logging. The system records when employees come and go and only allows authorised persons to enter certain areas. In addition to key fobs and cards, EVVA's Combi Key is also used as an identification medium and serves to operate both the mechanical and the electronic locking systems. It is thus a universal device.
A single security system for all buildings
SALTO manages access to all Miba buildings. EVVA products also develop in line with increased requirements - building extensions can be effortlessly incorporated into the system at a later date. With SALTO, intricate wiring is a thing of the past. The virtual network enables data to be easily exchanged via the identification medium carried by users. Lost identification media can be instantly blocked from the system. EVVA's decades of experience provides Miba with a long-term investment in the convenience and security it requires An experience which also stands in good stead numerous other companies equipped with EVVA systems throughout the world.
