EVVA equips DHL with custom security solutions.
For its European air freight hub at Leipzig/Halle airport, DHL was looking for a simple solution for a complicated task: How can additionally required security systems be deployed without having to swap out the existing systems? Can everything be integrated to preserve security of investment? Only EVVA was able to master this challenge. At DHL, the largest express and logistics specialist in the world and subsidiary of Deutschen Post World Net, security is of paramount importance. A fundamental prerequisite with more than 285,000 employees worldwide and over 1.5 billion shipments. This of course also applies to DHL hubs; one of the three largest air freight hubs in the world will be located at Leipzig/Halle airport from 2008 onwards. This is where express consignments for the whole of Europe will be handled.
"both..and" instead of "either or"
EVVA products are being used everywhere on the spacious DHL site in Leipzig. The office space has a particular feature. A security system is already installed that works with the non-contact identification technology HID iCLASS. DHL wanted a locking system with security fittings that could integrate HID iCLASS. Building modification or restructuring was out of the question. Otherwise the passes (IDs) of hundreds of employees would have had to be exchanged and re-issued. DHL was able to avoid these costs and the high organisational overhead with the SALTO XS4 electronic locking system from EVVA.
One partner – all technologies
In line with the EVVA motto "One partner – all technologies", different identification technologies, such as iButton, Smart Card, Mifare, Legic and, in the case of DHL, HID iCLASS, can be integrated into the SALTO fitting. A considerable benefit that also convinced DHL of the superiority of the SALTO system. 350 office doors were equipped with new SALTO-XS4 fittings. The fittings are fully compatible with the existing wall readers and also open/lock offline. Intricate wiring is therefore not required for the SALTO. This enables the workforce of 2000 or so (approx. 800 per shift) to continue to use their existing ID cards.
Mechanics as additional protection
DHL uses both the electronic and mechanical expertise of EVVA. In approx. 800 doors, mechanical locking systems from EVVA have been installed so as to allow mechanical locking/unlocking of the doors in the event of a technical failure of the wall readers. EVVA therefore provides security at all times, even in emergencies, as well as the effective protection of all DHL rooms.
Capable partner on-site
EVVA and Felgner Sicherheitstechnik, a reliable, local EVVA partner for many years, have met all of the specific requirements of DHL. Capable of being integrated and spanning technologies, the security technology avoids expensive conversion costs and works perfectly. As a next step, the use of SALTO XS4 in all other DHL offices in Germany is the subject of discussion.
